After Art Basel in 2010, the gallery was pleased to announce its first participation at the Armory Show, one of the most important fairs in the world of modern and contemporary art in a city, New York, which is considered as the epicenter of the art world since the early 1950s.
At this occasion, the gallery displayed an exceptional selection of works by Francois Morellet (born in 1926), mostly unseen, dated from the Sixties until today.
Thus the gallery continues across the Atlantic the work started four years ago to make more recognized in North America the pioneering role of François Morellet in the so-called minimalist movement.
This selection of pieces — grids, fragmentations, superpositions and interferences — will interact with works by the Romanian artist André Cadere (Warsaw 1934 – Paris 1978), especially a rare painting from 1967 and notably two earlier wooden bars executed in 1970-1971.
Both have introduced in their approach a systematic order which predetermines the art object. This dialogue between Morellet and Cadere will also reveal the distinctiveness of these two figures about structure, repetition, seriality, colour and also the fact that their commitment to engagement and interaction came to radically question the meaning and ends of art.
In parallel and in a kind of project room, the gallery will present Purple Wood, a new group of paintings by Bruno Carbonnet (born in 1957) that will bring a different sensibility. It will reflect the new position of the artist between poetry and images which are related to Emily Dickinson’s poems. Carbonnet, whose work was notably included in the Biennale de Paris in 1980 and the Bienal de Sao Paulo in 1987, continues to be a significant figure in the French field of contemporary painting.
